Satellite Symposium in Pediatric Cardiology, Bratislava, Slovakia

The Open Medical Institute is pleased to support Bratislava Cardiac Center in hosting a satellite symposium in Congenital Cardiac Disease. The satellite symposium will take place on November 5th and faculty members Dr. Chen from Columbia/NYPH and Dr. Stein from the University of Innsbruck will lecture on a range of topics. Local faculty members will also present cases which they will then discuss with the international faculty.

“Music for Medicine“ Benefit Concert, NY

The American Austrian Foundation’s 13th Annual “Music for Medicine” benefit will take place on Thursday, November 5, 2009, at Carnegie Hall in New York. The evening will feature a performance by members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in Zankel Hall, including Clemens Hellsberg (violin), Albena Danailova (violin), Dieter Flury (flute), Tobias Lea (viola), and Robert Nagy (cello).

Following the concert, a seated dinner will take place in the Rohatyn Room. A live auction will be conducted by Sotheby’s Jamie Ritchie; among the items up for auction are a trip to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s world-famous ball, a private concert with Yefim Bronfman, and a meal prepared in your home by Seäsonal Chef Wolfgang Ban. The evening will also feature a raffle of more than thirty luxury items.

All funds raised at “Music for Medicine” will benefit the Salzburg Weill Cornell Seminars of the Open Medical Institute. Since its inception in 1993, 10,800 physicians from 115 countries have been trained by US doctors at 307 seminars covering more than 30 medical specialties.

Salzburg Stiftung Benefit

On Monday, August 24th, the first Arenberg Matinee was held at the Schüttkasten in Salzburg. The event was extremely well attended and special thanks go to the Salzburg Festival, which provided the concert facilities at no cost as well as assistance with logistical matters. The concert by the Vienna Philharmonic met with great applause and we thank once again all those who attended and donated.

Benefit Concert in Yervan, Armenia

The Armenian Open Medical Club, The Fund for Armenian Relief Fellowship Alumni Association (FAR FAA), Yerevan State Medical University and The Armenian Youth Orchestra (conductor Sergey Smbatyan) organized a concert for the benefit of Schloss Arenberg on May 29th in the Main Conference Hall of Yerevan State Medical University.

More than 400 people attended, most of them Salzburg alumni. The Armenian Youth Orchestra was founded in November 2005 by students from Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory. Despite its recent formation, the Armenian Youth Orchestra has already performed all over the world. Sergey Smbatyan, violinist and prize-winner in international competitions, is the chief coductor and artistic director of the orchestra. Twelve year old piano soloist Anahit Arushanyan amazed the audience with her performance of Mozart, Komitas-Aslamazyan and E. Mirzoyan pieces.

The event raised approximately 4,500 Euros and Prof. Aulitzky announced that these funds will be put towards an “Armenian Lounge” in the newly constructed Schloss Arenberg.

Satellite Symposium in Maternal and Infant Health, Bucharest, Romania

Dr. David Rubenstein from NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Dr. Freidrich Reiterer from the Children's Hospital of the Medical University of Graz lectured at the OMI Satellite Symposium in Maternal and Infant Health on May 22 - 23, 2009. They also participated in a roundtable discussion with experts from the region on "How to Manage Newborn Care in a Resource Limited Setting". Their lectures were extremely well-received and participants asked that another satellite symposium be held in 2010.

Former AAF Conductor Fellow debuts with the San Francisco Symphony...with less than 24 hours notice!

Donato Cabrera, who participated in our fellowship program for young conductors in 2002, was asked to step in and conduct the San Francisco Symphony, which he managed with aplomb, despite having just one day to rehearse.

We are delighted that one of our fellows has been so successful and wish Donato even more success in his new position as Assistant Conductor of the San Francisco Symphony and Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Satellite Symposium in Anesthesiolgy in Bishkek, Kyrgzstan

The OMI Satellite Syposium in Anesthesiology took place on May 4 -5, 2009 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Dr. Aarti Sharma and Dr. Sudhir Diwan from NewYork Presbyterian Hospital lectured on a range of topics, and partipated in a round-table discussion on "Current Problems in Anesthesiology in Kyrgyzstand and the Prospect of Combined Cooperation". The satellite symposium was attended by 150 participants and was a great success.

Fire destroys Schloss Arenberg

Shortly after 3 PM on Monday, April 20th a fire broke out on the roof of Schloss Arenberg, where two welders had been doing some repairs. Fire fighters arrived within minutes, but had difficulty accessing the burning wooden beams under the copper roof. Thick smoke also hindered their efforts. The fire was finally extinguished at 4AM the following day. 180 Firefighters used 3,000 liters of water per minute to try and put out the blaze, which coupled with the smoke damage totally destroyed the building. Fortunately no one was seriously injured.

At the time of the fire a seminar was in session. All participants and faculty were evacuated and moved to alternate housing, some lost their passports and airline tickets in the blaze. These all were reissued during the week and everyone was able to return home on time. Course Director Dr. Kenneth Stein and his faculty managed to conduct almost all their lectures during the rest of the week.

Dr. Kenneth Stein and Dr. Dmitriy Feldman lectured at the OMI Satellite Symposium in Cardiology in Baku, Azerbaijan on April 17-18, 2009. Local faculty members presented interesting cases and there was a lively roundtable discussion of the topic "Indications for Intracardiac Electrophysiologic Investigation, Cardiac Pacing and Ablations". Over 60 participants attended the satellite symposium.

Dr. Aulitzky Awarded Honorary Doctorate

Professor Wolfgang Aulitzky, Medical Program Director of the Open Medical Institute, was awarded the academic title of Honorable Doctor by Tbilisi State University. Professor Aulitzky was delighted to receive this title in Tbilisi on March 27, 2009.
